Mother of Derby Weekends

                                                                               

They say ‘the best things in life are free’. So why not make your way down to a stadium near you, for some entertaining Cape NFD action at no cost.

Derby fever hits the City of Cape Town, as the NFD prepares for a Mother of Derby weekends. The action kicks off in Athlone, where the Capes oldest NFD team Santos host NFD rookies Cape Town All Stars.

There will be no neighbourly love, as both teams head into the match on the back of disappointing defeats, gunning for the derby honours.

Santos is currently in 9th position on the log, having scored 10 goals. Defensively however is where The Peoples Team will be looking to improve, having conceded 11 goals. All Stars are in 11th position, 3 points behind Santos. For Stars it’s in front of goal where they need to improve their shine, having only scored 5 goals.

Saturday sees the action moving to Parow Park, where Vasco Da Gama hosts FC Cape Town in the official Parow Derby. The two Cape sides are currently tied on 14 points each, one behind log leaders Arrows.

The match will mark the 6th meeting of the Parow based teams. Goals can always be expected as fixture has never produced a draw. The Stats sees both teams squared with 3 wins, with the home team on the day normally walking away with the win.

Golden Arrows vs. Witbank Spurs, Chatsworth Stadium, 15H30

The teams currently boasting the best defensive records do battle, Arrows yet to concede a goal, while Spurs having conceded 3 goals in 7 matches. Upfront however is where log leading Abafana Bes'thende needs to sharpen, having only scored 4 goals, leaving them tied with Garankuwa as the team with the least goals scored.

 

Santos FC vs. Cape Town All Stars, Athlone Stadium, 19H30

There will be no neighbourly love as The Peoples team reaches for the Stars. Both teams head into the Cape Derby on the back of disappointing defeats. Santos will look to tighten up at the back, having conceded 13 goals in 7 matches, while Stars aims to shine in front of goal.

 

Royal Eagles vs. Black Leopards, King Zwelithini Stadium, 19H30

Lidoda Duvha heads the Eagles nest full of confidence, having scored 9 goals in 3 matches without conceding a single goal. The host however find themselves flying low in the relegation zone, hoping to turn their fortunes around after parting ways with Coach Duncan Lechesa.

 

Garankuwa United vs. Jomo Cosmos, Pilditch Stadium, 19H30

Garankuwa heads into Fridays encounter with history on their side, having not lost a game to Cosmos in 5 matches played. United’s current form however sees them on a 4 match losing streak, desperately needing 3 points. They will have it all to do against a Cosmos team currently on a 4 match unbeaten run.

Vasco Da Gama vs. FC Cape Town, Parow Park, 15H30

An intense Parow Derby can be expected, with both teams currently tied on 14 points, 1 point behind log leaders Arrows. The African Beasts currently occupy 2nd position on the log, while Vasco is 4th due to goal difference. The battle will surely be on, as in 6 previous meetings the teams find themselves all squared with 3 wins and 3 losses.

 

Thanda Royal Zulu FC vs. Highlands Park, Umhlathuze Sports Complex, 15H30

The Lions do battle as Amabhubesi welcomes The Lions of The North. Thanda currently find themselves roaring the loudest, as they occupy 6th position on the log, while Highlands currently 12th. Amabhubesi however is yet to secure 3 points at home, while the visitors searches for their first win on the road. 

 

Maluti FET College vs. Milano United AFC, Charles Mopeli Stadium, 15H30

The promotional driven Kinnes travels to the Free State, in search of their 3rd consecutive away win. Bottom dwelling Maluti will surely be looking for a change of fortune, after receiving a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Black Leopards. Maluti will have it all to do, as they currently hold the worst defensive record with 18 goals conceded. 

 

Baroka FC vs. African Warriors, Peter Mokaba Stadium, 15H30

10th placed Bakgaga will need nothing less than 3 points, if they intend catching up with the leading pack. Baroka last tasted a victory 7 matches ago. They host a Warriors team who is yet to lose a match under Coach Abram Nteo.

NFD Top Scorers_WK 7

A total of 20 GOALS were scored over the past weekend, resulting in the most goals over a weekend in 7 weeks of NFD action.

 

Ace Bhengu made it  5 goals in 4 matches, which sees him leading the way as the league’s top goal scorer.

Black Leopards currently hold the record for the most goals scored by a team in a match, as they put 5 goals past bottom placed Maluti.

Leonard Ntshangase added to his telly which sees him in joint 2nd place alongside Brent Adonis and Suhayl Allie.

The leading pack is closely followed by Highlands Parks’ Lerato Mosopa with 3 goals to his name.

 

 

 

 

 

                                                                      

                                                                              

Thanda Shoots Down 10 men Stars

Boebie Solomons suffered his first defeat of the season, as Thanda shot down 10 men Stars, in an action packed NFD encounter.

The first half was evenly balanced, with both teams sharing their fair share of missed opportunities.                 

Stars however were dealt a massive blow in the 53rd minute of the game, as A Memela was sent off for his second bookable offence of the night.

7 minutes later and things went from bad to worse for Stars, as they saw themselves 2 goals behind, goals by M Hlophe and S Dlamini.

The NFD’s top marksman Ace Bhengu soon joined the Thanda party, as he too found the back of the net.

Stars will look to regroup ahead of Fridays Cape Derby against Santos.

Milano United AFC vs. Vasco Da Gama, Philippi Stadium, 19H30

The El Kaapico returns to the Mother City, as the log leading Kinnes host their city rivals Vasco. There will surely be no neighbourly love from Vasco, as they look to make up for their recent home loss. On the goal front Milano is leading the way with 9 goals scored, 6 of those being at home. Vasco has so far only managed 2 on the road, but their stats against Milano however are even, with 2 wins and 2 losses in 4 games.

Cape Town All Stars vs. Thanda Royal Zulu FC, Athlone Stadium, 19H30
CT All Stars will be looking to outshine their Royal Zulu visitors. Amabhubesi returns Cape Town, 2 weeks after experiencing their first loss of the season. The KZN team will surely be looking to rectify their mistakes as they go in search of maximum points against the NFD Rookies. The confidence of the Rookies however will be sky high, as they come into the match on the back of their first victory in the NFD.

Black Leopards vs. Maluti FET College, Thohoyandou Stadium, 15H30
Both teams have not experienced the best of starts to the NFD season. Leopards had to resort to a coaching change, which saw them rocket up to 7th position on the log, while Maluti still finds themselves rock bottom. Whenever these teams play each other it rains goals. Last season a total of 15 goals were scored in 2 matches, Leopards handing out the lessons, with a 7-4 home and 1-3 away win.

Golden Arrows vs. Garankuwa United, Chatsworth Stadium, 15H30
Arrows continue their impressive defensive record, having not conceded a goal in 6 matches. Upfront however is where the Shaun Bartlett coached team needs some sharpening. Garankuwa on the other hand is experiencing a slight slump, having lost their last 3 matches. 6 points separates 3rd placed Arrows from 12th Garankuwa. A win or even a goal for Garankuwa, will see them achieve what 6 teams before them have failed to do.

FC Cape Town vs. Baroka FC, NNK Rugby Stadium, 15H30
2nd placed African Beasts is surely having a near perfect start to the season, after flirting with relegation a season ago. Saturday will see them welcome 11th placed Baroka, a team who holds a perfect winning record against the Beasts. This season however Bakgaga is desperately in search of their second win of the season, as they last tasted a victory in their opening match.

African Warriors vs. Witbank Spurs, Charles Mopeli Stadium, 15H30
A change in coach resulted in a change in fortune for Warriors, as they recorded their 1st win of the season. 4 points currently separate 6th placed from 14th Warriors. The Free State based Warriors welcomes their boggy team Siyavutha, who have not lost a match to Warriors in 6 previous meetings. 4 of those matches ended in wins for Spurs, while Warriors only managing 2 draws.

Highlands Park vs. Royal Eagles, Makhulong Stadium, 15H30
The Lions of the North welcomes the low flying Eagles, who currently find themselves 2nd from bottom, two places below Highlands. Pressure however will be on the Eagles Coach, Duncan Lechesa whose team has lost 4 out of 6 matches. Highlands will surely need to cash in on all 3 points as they face the big spending Eagles.

Jomo Cosmos vs. Santos FC, Vaal University of Technology, 15H30
The Peoples Team heads up to the Vaal, where they will encounter an old foe in Ezenkhozi. The match will also see two of South Africa’s 2002 World Cup coaching staff, do battle against each other. This fixture has a rich history, with 36 matches played since 1997. Santos currently edging Cosmos, having won 14, drawn 12 and loosing 10.

Ø  The weekend also saw both CT All Stars and Maluti recording their first wins of the season.

Santos FC vs. Thanda Royal Zulu FC, Athlone Stadium, 19H30
The Peoples Team will look to bounce back after a disappointing weekend on the road, as they host Amabhubesi. Both teams head into the match with 7 points, with Thanda edging Santos on goal difference. Stats wise sees Thanda only conceding 2 goals in 5 matches, while Santos scoring 7 in 2 home matches.

Royal Eagles FC vs. Cape Town All Stars, King Zwelithini Stadium, 19H30
Both teams currently flirting with relegation, Eagles currently 3rd from bottom, while Stars just one position above in 13th place. A win for either team will see them flying comfortably in the mid-table region. Should be entertainment all round as Stars look to shine, while Eagles look to fly high at night.

Garankuwa United vs. African Warriors, Pilditch Stadium, 19H30
3 points separates 2nd from bottom Warriors from 11th placed Garankuwa United. Warriors will be looking to improve on a dismal start to the season, after parting ways with Coach David Vilakazi. Garankuwa will be looking for nothing less than a win as they currently 6 points behind the leading pack.

Vasco will surely be looking at no repeats of last season’s 4-1 home defeat they suffered at the hands of Leopards. The fixture marked the turning point in Lidoda Duvha reaching the playoff. Six points separates 3rd place Vasco from 10th Leopards, will history repeat itself?
Witbank Spurs vs. FC Cape Town, Puma Rugby Stadium, 15H30
The Log leading African Beasts takes a trip up to Mpumalanga where they will be hosted by 5th placed Siyavutha. The Beast currently unbeaten on the road will be facing a Siyavutha team that’s unbeaten at home, averaging 2 goals per match.
Baroka FC vs. Milano United AFC, Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, 15H30
After losing out to leopards in the Limpopo Derby, Bakgaga will surely be looking at an improved performance as they host the title chasing Kinnes. Baroka has not lost to Milano in two previous meetings, but Milano having recently tasted an away victory, will be looking to change that.

8th placed Ezenkosi welcomes 4th place Abafana Bes'thende who are well on track for a return to the PSL. Arrows currently boast the best defensive record, having not conceded a single goal in 5 games. Their problem however lies upfront as they have also scored the least. Cosmos on the back of a 3-1 win will surely be looking to unlock the stubborn Arrows defence.
