He might not be doing his famous jacket-throwing celebration quite yet, but after some early season disappointments, Santos are finally making some serious strides under Zeca Marques.
The Peoples’ Team may not have matched some of their fellow Cape sides in high-profile signings , but instead they have been cashing in on their players’ mental strength which has seen them on a seven match unbeaten streak.
It however has not been all smooth sailing for the Lansdowne-based side, who after three rounds of matches found themselves in the relegation zone, while they had an eight match wait before recording a first victory of the campaign.
"I would say the players are starting to believe in what we are capable of doing as a team and in their individual abilities, which has transformed into results on the pitch," Coach Marques revealed.
"Our substitutions are also making a huge difference, before we had no impact coming on from the bench, but that has changed. Players are starting to raise their game and with such performances we will be capable of beating any team in this league whether it’s home or away," he concluded.
Tasked with assisting his team is former Jomo Cosmos attacker Broderick Burds, who seems to be having a new lease on life with the Peoples Team. His skill and pace contributed to a super-sub performance against AmaZulu, two assists enabling Santos to come from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw last weekend.
“The coach has been working a lot with us, he brings a new philosophy and playing style, the players took a bit of time to adapt but we starting to understand what is expected and our recent performances on the field is proof thereof,” Burds explained.
