Santos off the Marques

He might not be doing his famous jacket-throwing celebration quite yet, but after some early season disappointments, Santos are finally making some serious strides under Zeca Marques.

The Peoples’ Team may not have matched some of their fellow Cape sides in high-profile signings , but instead they have been cashing in on their players’ mental strength which has seen them on a seven match unbeaten streak.

It however has not been all smooth sailing for the Lansdowne-based side, who after three rounds of matches found themselves in the relegation zone, while they had an eight match wait before recording a first victory of the campaign.

"I would say the players are starting to believe in what we are capable of doing as a team and in their individual abilities, which has transformed into results on the pitch," Coach Marques revealed.

"Our substitutions are also making a huge difference, before we had no impact coming on from the bench, but that has changed. Players are starting to raise their game and with such performances we will be capable of beating any team in this league whether it’s home or away," he concluded.

Tasked with assisting his team is former Jomo Cosmos attacker Broderick Burds, who seems to be having a new lease on life with the Peoples Team. His skill and pace contributed to a super-sub performance against AmaZulu, two assists enabling Santos to come from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw last weekend.

“The coach has been working a lot with us, he brings a new philosophy and playing style, the players took a bit of time to adapt but we starting to understand what is expected and our recent performances on the field is proof thereof,” Burds explained.

Vasco looking to score with Cousins

The NFD action returns after a week-long FIFA International break, the Cape sides looking to end the first half of the season on a high as the penultimate round of league fixtures for 2015 kick off this weekend.

With the departure of Head Coach Tony De Nobrega, 13th-placed Vasco Da Gama will be hoping that the appointment of Noel Cousins, a deadly marksman in his day, to the caretaker position, will see them turn the corner against fifth-placed Highlands Park on Saturday.

Parow Park has not been a good hunting ground this season for Vasco, who have scored only three goals in five home matches, as they welcome the league's best defensive side in the Lions of the North.

”It's not that we have not played well, it’s just that we have not been taking our chances," Vasco Team Manager Kenny Gertse said.

"We have made some quality signings, matched our opposition by playing some good football, but found ourselves being unlucky in front of goal. The mood has always been good, but quality signings don’t guarantee results. We just need to gel as a team and will be looking to turn things around against Highlands Park,” he concluded.

Saturday sees two away fixtures scheduled for the KZN Province, as FC Cape Town (15th) clash with Thanda Royal Zulu host, while Milano United (9th) square off against the high-flying Royal Eagles.

The local action heats up on Sunday as Santos (10th) look to extend their five match unbeaten streak, hosting AmaZulu at the Athlone Stadium. Meanwhile Cape Town All Stars are looking to bounce back after taking just a point in their last two matches - they travel to the Limpopo for a top-of-the-table clash against log-leaders Baroka FC.

All matches kick-off at 3.30pm.

The Cape adds to Mzansi Derby weekend

Cape Town’s five NFD clubs will all be looking to get some consistency in their games as the latest round of action approaches this weekend.

Yet another crunch derby encounter awaits the Mother City on Saturday, as Cape Town’s highest scoring side Santos, with eleven goals in nine matches, travel to the NNK Rugby Stadium to take on FC Cape Town, a side which leaked the most goals - 15.

The momentum will be with the Peoples’ Team, who are currently in 11th position having secured seven points from their last three outings, while the 13th placed African Beasts will be looking to crawl back from their three-match losing streak.
"It's been a long slog for us, we didn't start off as we wanted to, but the guys are putting it together now,” Santos head coach Zeca Marques explained.

“The sense of belief is back in the team, and heading into our next derby clash, I don't have to motivate the guys too much. We need take the positives from our previous matches (wins over African Warriors and Black Leopards) and move forward. Hopefully we'll continue to score more as we concede less, which is a good plus," added Marques.

Also on Saturday, down at the Athlone Stadium, log-leading Cape Town All Stars host on-form Mbombela United, while Vasco Da Gama (12th) travel to Thohoyandou, to take on struggling Black Leopards.

The action heats up on Sunday when mid-table Milano United’s defence will have to be on full alert, when they welcome the high-scoring Baroka FC to the Athlone Stadium, the Limpopo outfit having netted 23 goals in ten matches.

All matches kick-off at 3.30pm.

Cape teams chase improved performances

The NFD action returns after a week-long FIFA break, with the Cape-based sides chasing improved performances as they find themselves at the wrong end of the promotion seeking table.

Pressure will surely be on the Mother City’s lowest rank side Santos, currently second from bottom and still chasing that elusive first win of the season, as they face ninth-placed Milano United in Sunday's derby encounter.

The Peoples Team should however feel more than comfortable with Milano’s decision to move their home fixture to Athlone Stadium.

There are also some positives to be taken from the recent derby trend, which has seen the lower ranked side walking away with either a draw or victory. Additionally, Santos have also been boosted with the arrival of some new faces this week, including former Milano striker Brent Adonis, Shafiek Arendse, Issouf Paro (Burkina Faso) and Thabane Ntshangase (Carara Kicks).

Making his return to a place he once called home is former Santos attacker Gregory Roelf, now in the colours of Eezy My Kinnes as he focuses on nothing less than three points.

"Emotions heading into a Cape Derby are always high and you just have to stay focussed and not get carried away. I have nothing to prove against Santos but I would love to start or come on from the bench and collect the three points for Milano. I feel that it's still early days, and it we have what it takes to go all the way,” Roelf tells the Daily Voice.

Meanwhile in Saturday’s action, Cape Town All Stars look to get back to winning ways as they host Highlands Park at the Athlone Stadium. FC Cape Town welcome AmaZulu to the NNK Rugby Stadium.

In the only away match of the weekend, Vasco Da Gama travel to the Free State to take on African Warriors on Sunday. All matches kick-off at 3.30pm.

Kinnes head closer to home

It's A for Athlone as Milano United backtracks from their Blue Downs home venue, putting the Eezy My Kinnes supporters first by moving the majority of their home fixtures to the Athlone Stadium, currently also home to Cape Town All Stars and Santos.

Milano initially thought the Blue Downs Stadium would serve as their home away from home, due to the venue's windy conditions which were similar to the Rooikrans Sports Complex.

This however was not the case as the promotional-driven Kinnes were dealt a mixed bag of results, the 30 kilometre distance from their home in Grassy Park to the Northern Suburbs causing a drop in supporter numbers according to the club’s General Manager Sean Ferrier.

Adjusting to the Blue Downs pitch was always going to be against Milano, having spent only three training sessions at the venue before the commencement of the season. It has however proved a different story at Athlone Stadium, the Kinnes looking a completely different team on a quality surface when they beat the then log-leading Cape Town All Stars 3-0 a few weeks back.

I caught up with Ferrier during a practice match, to get some confirmation on the move.

"We will be moving a bulk of our fixtures to Athlone Stadium, with Blue Downs now becoming our alternate home venue," he said.

“Firstly it was due to the supporters, as travelling to Blue Downs has been a problem for our supporters, resulting in a drop in the numbers. Athlone seems ideal in terms of distance and the professional environment we want for the players. We saw the effect it had in the match against All Stars."

Asked about the difference between Athlone and Blue Downs Stadium.

“The pitch as well as the set-up does play a role. If you look at the quality surface at Athlone it's conducive to good football, the passing is better as the players are more confident due to the pitch. Blue Downs is playable but the surface uneven,” he concluded.

Khayelitsha-born Star set for Sweden

It's off to Europe for Mihlali 'Mabhuti' Mayambela as the Cape Town All Stars attacker looks to impress Swedish outfit Djurgardens IF during a 12 day trial.

Mabhuti, the younger brother of former Orlando Pirates ball-wizard Mark Mayambela, has been making his own mark on the football scene, especially after his player-of-the-tournament performance at the 2015 U19 Metropolitan Premier Cup.

The skillful young attacker with breathtaking free kick taking abilities will be hoping that his hunger to succeed will see him making it in Europe after having spent last season in the NFD.

CSM caught up with Mabhuti after his first training session to hear how Djurgardens has been treating him.

"Wow, I have never seen or experienced such a warm welcome before, I must say I am humbled at the manner in which the team at Djurgardens have recieved me, they are so excited to have me here, I really enjoyed it," he said.

CSM would like to wish the young Mayambela much success as he showcases his talent abroad.

Mofokeng Investment pays dividends

James Mofokeng repaid the faith shown by CT All Stars Management as the central defender's first goal in Igugu Lekapa colours not only secured victory but also made sure Stars remain top of the NFD standings after three matches played.

Mofokeng was the only goal-scorer on Friday at Athlone as Stars edged out African Warriors 1-0, the central defender netting with a well-placed header following a cross by Thabo Makgothi.

Mofokeng, who has been on the books of Platinum Stars, Chippa United and Ajax CT to name a few clubs, is relishing the opportunity of regular game time after the great potential shown in his youth career.

CapeTownAllStarsfc.co.za caught up with James after scoring his first goal for Igugu Lekapa.

"It feels good as it's my first goal for Cape Town All Stars. We have been practicing set pieces and crosses into the box, so it's good that it paid off," he explained.

"Life at All Stars is good as I am being given a chance to play, at my previous clubs I wasn't afforded the opportunity, I am thankful to Stars," he concluded.

NFD all weekend long

Kicking-off the weekend’s NFD proceedings is a crunch encounter on Friday as log-leading Cape Town All Stars welcome 11th placed Milano United to the Athlone Stadium.

It's been a mixed a bag of results for the five Cape-based teams, with the All Stars supporters having the most to cheer about after securing four wins from four matches.

The same however cannot be said for the rest of the city's NFD supporters, who will be rallying behind their teams as they try to turn their respective fortunes around.

Normally strong starters, the Kinnes themselves in unfamiliar early-season territory, having lost two matches from four. They will be looking to the experience of captain Nasief Morris to get their campaign back on track.

"We've had a different start to the season if compared to previous seasons, with a few questionable refereeing decisions going against us. We remain positive. Although we face a Stars team who are doing well, we will approach the derby encounter like any other game. The coach has been encouraging us to continue to fight as things will change,” former Bafana International Morris told the Daily Voice.

Lining up on the opposite side as skipper is another Cape born central defender in Howie Davids, Igugu Lekapa’s inspirational hard-man.

“Our persistence in working for the team and the consistency has been key to a good start,” said Davids. “I expect Milano to be very physical and to try and intimidate us, but the boys are working hard at training and fully focussed, which is a big positive heading into the derby.”

Saturday’s action sees second from bottom Santos gunning for their first win as they welcome Witbank Spurs to the Athlone Stadium. FC Cape Town will attempt to repeat All Stars’ heroics from last weekend up in the Limpopo when they face Black Leopards away from home.

Vasco Da Gama wrap up the weekend's action on Sunday when they host Thanda Royal Zulu at Parow Park. All the matches kick off at 3pm.

Saturday 3 October 2015

CT Derby on the double

A double dose of derby action awaits the Mother City on Saturday, with crunch encounters scheduled for both Athlone Stadium and Parow Park.

The playing field could well be level at Athlone when second-placed Cape Town All Stars and second-from-bottom Santos lock horns in what may be dubbed the Athlone Tenants’ derby, with the venue serving as a home for both clubs.

The encounter sees Dan Malesela's All Stars looking to get back to winning ways after last weekend’s defeat against Milano United.

“It’s not like we played horribly, but we conceded goals, Santos might try to employ the same tactics, sit back and wait for the counter. We will be working on ways to break tight defences, which will result in us finding the goals,” Coach Dan revealed to the Daily Voice.

The Santos coaching staff will be focussing on getting the players’ confidence levels up after failing to secure a win in five matches played.

"Psychologically we will have to work on our players’ mind-sets, their heads are dropping especially due to the manner in which we’ve been conceding. However at the end of the day I believe we have what it takes to compete against All Stars," said Santos assistant manager Keith America.

Meanwhile there will be no room for neighbourly love as Vasco Da Gama host winless FC Cape Town at Parow Park, with Vasco coach Tony De Nobrega confessing a tough encounter awaits his side even after their confidence boosting win against Thanda Royal Zulu last weekend.

"It doesn’t matter who’s on form leading into the derby, the match is always even and you need to work real hard to get three points against them,” De Nobrega confessed.

Also on Saturday, Milano United travel to KZN to take on Thanda. All matches kick off at 3.30pm

NFD Preseason hits the Mother City

It’s all systems go as the Mother City’s National First Division teams gear up for their preseason activities.

With less than two months till the start of the 2015-16 NFD season, the off the field action heats up as the 1 July 2015 marks the opening of the transfer window.

The window period provides teams with an opportunity to strengthen their squads ahead of the new campaign, looking to put last season’s mistakes to bed as promotion to the countries elite league being every chairman’s ultimate dream.

The road to last season’s promotion has not been the sweetest ride for the five Cape teams, NFD rookies Cape Town All Stars finishing as the best placed Cape side securing fifth position in their maiden season.

Looking to make amends for last season’s inconsistent performance is none other than promotional driven Milano United, who wasted no time in snatching up Coach Boebie Solomons after last season’s heroics with All Stars.

Grassy Park-based Milano along with Santos have already shifted into preseason mode as both teams reported for duty on Monday, 22 June.
The rest of the Cape teams however will return to preseason action in July, with Gugulethu-based All Stars scheduled to announce their new head coach in the first week.

Also set to make an official head coach announcement will be FC Cape Town, the Parow-based team will be looking to their new man at the helm to guide them to the promise land.

First up though, will be a return to preseason training on the 6 July for The African Beasts along with their neighbours Vasco Da Gama before those ambitions can be achieved.

Glendene sets sights on NFD

It was a dream come true for Glendene United who finally put their ABC Motsepe League jitters to bed, when they were crowned champions of the Western Cape Region on Saturday afternoon at the Westridge Sports Complex in Mitchells Plain.

The Bradley August-coached Glendene had gone into their final match of the season in poll position, needing nothing less than a draw against 12th placed Knysna Bafana, who are coached by former Vasco da Gama and FC Cape Town marksman Marcelino Fransch.

Having lead the league for the most part of the season after losing only three matches, the Athlone-based club could ill afford for complacency to creep in, especially with an inform Steenberg United breathing down their necks in second position, waiting to pounce.

Knysna Bafana dominated the opening exchanges, causing some nervy moments for the Glendene supporters who have experienced heartache before, the club having finished in second position for the past two seasons.

History however had no chance of repeating itself, as Glendene held on for a 0-0 draw, securing their place in NFD promotional play-offs which take place in Kimberley from July 22-26.

August went on to share his thoughts on the match:  “We struggled, we didn’t play our free-flowing football. They were more determined, but we did what we had to do and we got the result."

The 36 year old former Bafana Bafana striker will now have to shift gears for the national play-offs:

“I have a long way to go in coaching still. I’m happy with my achievements, but now the preparations start as we head into the play-offs. It’s a bit difficult because we have to wait a few weeks before we head to Kimberley. If we do well we will have two to three weeks to prepare for the NFD. It’s tough but it’s better to be in this situation than to have no NFD opportunity,” he concluded.

It was also a proud day for chairman Shaffie Mowzer, who just a couple of months ago saw the club’s Under-19 side winning the Bayhill tournament:

“It is a tremendous achievement, and I think Glendene deserves to be in the NFD,” he said. “After two seasons coming second, we’ve done the business this year. Over the last three or four weeks, I think the pressure told. The young players struggled with the pressure from leading the league for so long. The two draws and the loss to Steenberg made it a lot more difficult, but the [league] victory was sweet…”

NFD Wrap Up WK_22

Saturdays action saw Golden Arrows move 3 points clear at the top, while Jomo Cosmos and Cape Town All Stars dropped points on the road.

Garankuwa United's relegation woes continued as they welcomed table topping Arrows, Abafana Bes'thende did little to help the Garankuwa's survival course as they defeated the homeside 2-0.

Igugu Lekapa suffered a 3-1 defeat to Thanda Royal Zulu, the result saw Amabhubesi move up to 2nd, 3 points behind their KZN neighbours Abafana Bes'thende. Ezenkosi remained winless in the Cape after their third match in the province ended in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Santos. The result sees promotion chasing Cosmos suffer their second defeat in a row.

In other results the Cape Town Derby ended all squared as Vasco Da Gama and Milano United played to their 1st draw in 6 league meetings.

In the Free State, bottom of the log Maluti FET College showed some fight as they equalised in stoppage time, holding out for a 1-1 draw against free scoring Black Leopards. Maluti currently 10 points from safety after conceding 50 goals in 22 matches.

In KZN Royal Eagles took flight after 2 defeats in a row, as they defeated the Lions of the North 2-1.

Thanda Royal Zulu v CT All Stars Preview: An Epic battle awaits in the Amabhubesi den

The National First Division action heats up as All Stars travel to KZN, to face third placed Thanda Royal Zulu in a promotional ‘six’ pointer.

Thanda Royal Zulu vs Cape Town All Stars, Umhlathuze Sports Complex, Saturday 14 March, 15H30

The boys will have to remain grounded even after securing six wins in a row in the NFD, as Igugu Lekapa face an Amabhubesi side who gave coach Boebie Solomons his first defeat of the NFD season in the reverse fixture.

The reverse fixture will also be remembered for its drama as Star attacker Amigo Memela was given his marching orders after a second bookable offence, but with all these lessons in the past, Stars find themselves currently in fourth position on the log, a point behind Thanda.

Thanda only suffered one defeat at home this season but Igugu Lekapa can draw some confidence as the Richards Bay team have not managed to collect maximum points against Cape opposition in four previous league encounters.

The CT All Stars website caught up with inform goal poacher Zaid Patel to get his thoughts on the crucial encounter:
“The mood is great - we're on an unbelievable run… if we stick to our game plan we can compete with anyone at the moment…”

When asked about the contributing factors to his rich goal scoring form, the lanky striker explained:

“The belief in me from the club… being able to stay fit and not pick up injuries… and being part of a really good team in which chances are being created.”

Patel went further to give credit to fellow attacker Memela, “We can score against anyone. We have a real match winner in the form of Amigo who on his day can destroy any defense in the league.”

Stars have Patel and Memela set to take on a Thanda side who currently boast the best defence in the league. On the other side we have the league's top scorer in Ace Bhengu against Igugu Lekapa's number one shot stopper Kyle Peters.

All Stars will be at almost full strength - only Houston Hills is out injured.

Monday 9 March 2015

Courageous Stars earn their stripes.

Cape Town All Stars 2-0 Royal Eagles
08 March 2015 - Philippi Stadium

An Amigo Memela brace was enough to see Cape Town All Stars shoot up to 4th position on the log, after a hard fought 2-0 victory against Royal Eagles, on Sunday afternoon at Philippi Stadium.

The visitors dominated the opening exchanges, with a great passing football display in and around the All Stars box, but Boebie Solomons' charges stood firm as they chose to absorb the early pressure.

A patient looking Stars attack had to wait untill the 15th minute to find their first clearcut opportunity, A Memela break on the left resulted in a cross which found the head of Zaid Patel, his effort though was directly at the keeper as the scores remained 0-0.

On the other end a Lifa Hlongwane volley received a great receiption from the Eagles supporters as his effort brushed the crossbar, but 0-0 is how the half ended, both teams with their fair share of chances.

A slow start to the second half saw coach Boebie ringing the changes, substitute Sizwe Mdlinzo proving dividends in the 78th minute as his freekick swung in with serious pace found the head of Memela who guided it into the back of the net, 1-0 to All Stars.

The goal saw Eagles take flight as they turned up the pressure on the Stars defence, after a nervy few moments in the Stars defence it was Memela on the counter, his solo effort saw him pierce through the Eagles defence then calmly slotting home in stoppage time.

The result sees Stars reclaim 4th position, 1 point behind 3rd placed Thanda Royal Zulu and 4 points from leaders Golden Arrows.

CT ALL Stars Starting XI: Peters, Gwala, Davids, Mofokeng, Stuurman, Memela, Gololo, Qambela, Sibeko, Msomi, Patel
Royal Eagles Starting XI: Tsengwa, Dube, Maponyane, Hlongwane, Meyiwa, Masinga, Komane, Maselwa, Cele, Luthuli, Ndlovu.
